Korby speaks with composer, producer, songwriter and musician Tim Lauer, one of the most prolific - and adaptive- creatives working in Nashville today. As a keyboardist he's played on hundreds of studio albums, from Taylor Swift to Foy Vance to Insane Clown Posse. He’s also produced artists like Mikky Ekko, Rhiannon Giddens and John Oates, but lately his interests have segued to the world of television and film. He followed T Bone Burnett and Buddy Miller as executive music producer for the TV show Nashville seasons five and six. He’s produced over two hundred cast recordings for shows including Nashville, Tell Me A Story, Greenleaf , Carnival Row, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist , The Stranger and Big Sky.

Here, Tim turns reflective, discussing how he stays motivated and what has kept him sane through the ups and downs of his storied career, now in its 4th decade.

In this 2 hour conversation we talk about on how Tim he has dealt with ego in applying his own talents to achieve someone else’s vision, the perato distribution of Nashville studio musicians where a very small number of cats play on almost all the big records. We also discuss Tim's purpose driven approach to music creation, how he’s always thinking of where a song might fit in or make money.

We also get into how maintaining a spiritual practice and a supportive community is key in terms staying sane and unjaded across time.

Finally, Tim produced my self-titled album, so we revisit that moment by playing the lead off track "Hurts Me So" live in the studio.
